UWA-101 is also known as α-cyclopropyl-MDMA. The chemical structure of this substance is quite similar to the illegal drug MDMA, the only exception is the replacement of the α-methyl group with a α-cyclopropyl group.
MDMA is illegal because of its abuse potential, neurotoxicity and possibly dangerous side effects mean that it is unlikely to be examined for pharmaceutical use in this application, and so alternative analogs were analyzed.
UWA-121 is the (R)-enantiomer of UWA-101, and the (S)-enantiomer is UWA-122. Both are active monoamine reuptake inhibitors.
